The Water and Air Quality Laboratory of the University of the Aegean, Greece ((Drs Spyros Golfinopoulos and Anastasia Nikolaou and Professor Themistokles Lekkas) was founded in 1995 and covers research and educational needs in the scientific fields of water and wastewater quality, indoor and outdoor air quality, gaseous waste and protection of the environment from pollution and degradation. Particular emphasis is given to the determination of trace concentrations of toxic organic compounds by use of gas and liquid chromatography techniques, as well as heavy metals by use of atomic absorption spectrometry.

One of their main research areas in which they have extensive experience and expertise is the analytical chemistry, measurement and modeling of DBPs. They have experience in this area dating back to the early nineties and are one of the few groups in Europe to publish extensively on the formation and occurrence of various DBPs. They participate in national projects in the field of the disinfection by-products. They will lead the research area on the measurement and modelling of DBPs, lead WP 2 and contribute to many other WPs.
