Scarab is a Swedish private development company that develops proprietary technology for water purification and creates projects for increasing supply of high quality water. These included: water purifiers for households, water treatment for nuclear power plants, sea-water desalination disaster relief equipment for producing electricity and pure water and point of use solutions for removal of chlorination byproducts in domestic tap water.

Managing Director and founder, Aapo Sääsk, MA, MSc, MBA, has extensive experience as advisor to international funding agencies and foreign Governments in the areas of energy, food, water and business development. Through its subsidiaries, Scarab is preparing to launch at least three POU water purification products for the consumer market and two for industrial water purification during 2006. Through its collaboration with the Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm, Scarab is addressing the problems of Arsenic in wells in Bangladesh. Scarab will use its extensive experience in water treatment technology development and implementation to review current technology and, where possible, the planned technological development road map, against epidemiological knowledge. Scarab will develop and carry out evaluation approaches aimed at illuminating the risks/benefits, water and health impacts and policy implications related to the technological opportunities and challenges facing the water treatment industry as a result of epidemiological knowledge. They will contribute to WP 9.
