The Municipal Institute of Medical Research Foundation (FIMIM) of Barcelona, Spain and the Catalan Institute of Oncology/IDIBELL are focused on scientific research in Biomedicine and Health Science, as well as the training of highly qualified researchers in these fields.

The FIMIM team (Drs. Cristina Villanueva, Jordi Sunyer, Núria Ribas, and a joint appointment with the Professor Manolis Kogevinas) have extensive experience and expertise in conducting epidemiological studies to evaluate health effects associated with exposure to disinfection by-products (DBPs). They have coordinated an international pooled analysis of bladder cancer and DBPs (funded by the EU), a case-control study of bladder cancer conducted in Spain to evaluate the increased risk associated with DBP exposure (EPICUR-Red, funded by the Spanish Ministry of Health). They are currently conducting a cohort study of pregnant women and newborns (INMA study, funded by the Spanish Ministry of Health) to evaluate the risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes (intrauterine growth retardation, prematurity, etc.) associated with DBP exposure during pregnancy. They are involved in a number of current EU projects (INTARESE, NewGeneris, EARNEST). Some of the before mentioned studies will take part of the current project (EPICUR-Red, INMA).

The team will lead WP7 and make a major contribution to WP 4 and some others.
